Monroe was a lawyer and the fifth U.S President. During his presidency, he oversaw the acquisition of Florida from Spain and established the Monroe Doctrine, which declared that the United States would not tolerate European interference in the affairs of the Western Hemisphere. Monroe also signed the Missouri Compromise, which sought to maintain a balance of free and slave states in the Union. His legacy includes his role in the American Revolution, his contributions to the development of U.S foreign policy, and his efforts to promote national unity and government stability.
