Gettysburg Address

During the American Civil War on November 19, 1863 President Abraham Lincoln delivered this speech at the dedication of the Soldiers’ National Cemetery in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The address was delivered to honor the Union soldiers who had died at the Battle of Gettysburg, which had taken place four months earlier. In his speech, Lincoln commemorated the fallen soldiers and addressed the nation's need to reunite and rebuild following the Civil War. He also discussed the principles of liberty and equality that form the bedrock of American democracy. Lincoln concluded his address with a call for Americans to be dedicated to the cause of “a new birth of freedom” in the United States. The Gettysburg Address is one of the most famous speeches in American history and is still remembered for its eloquence and power.
